Skate Sculpture was awarded the consultation and design tender to deliver a youth space, including a skatepark, basketball court, nature play area, public art sculptural work, barbeque area, water fountain, landscaping, seating, shading and additional play equipment for the Shire of Kalamunda at Hartfield Reserve, Forrestfield.

The community engagement process included three design workshops, which were critical in completing the final design. Due to our effective communication efforts, we were able to compile more than 130 surveys, create a Facebook group that included 299 members with over 50 posts and a final workshop event including between 80-100 participants.

Upon completion of the consultation and design phase, a meeting was arranged with the council and the community participation and support for the facility was strongly communicated and evident by all staff and counsellors. Skate Sculpture provided the design on-time and within budget and the project has exceeded council expectations, receiving an award from the Planning Institute of Australia for Planning Excellence in the category of Public Engagement and Community Development.

Forrestfield Youth Space Documentary

This documentary highlights Skate Sculpture’s process of working with local communities to create innovative public space design.

The Forrestfield Skate Park is an exemplary demonstration of participatory budgeting and community democracy. The Shire of Kalamunda, through Skate Sculpture, has undertaken an innovative and effective approach to engage with different sectors of the local community using a range of tools and participatory styles. Whilst maintaining realistic expectations, this approach has allowed the community to develop its own outcomes in a team environment. The result is a strong sense of community pride and ownership in the project and its on-ground outcome.
