In 2017, Skate Sculpture was engaged by the Shire of Boddington to create a concept design for a youth space and skatepark in the town of Boddington, 130km south-east of Perth. After inspecting several sites with Shire of Boddington staff, Skate Sculpture presented the two most suitable location options to the youth of Boddington, who were largely in favour of seeing the new facility built in the city centre, near the pre-existing youth centre.
With the location decided upon, we spent an intensive day with the local youth, gathering their ideas for the skate and recreational elements they hoped to see incorporated into the design. After the consultation, we held a skate event and BBQ at the pre-existing skatepark to further unite the community.
Due to the remote location of Boddington, we deemed it important to offer a large level of diversity in the terrain including skate-able seating elements on a top-level basketball court leading into a skate plaza section surrounding an enclosed bowl. We presented this concept to the youth of Boddington and after making some final changes based on their suggestions, finalised the design with an accompanying documentary to assist the shire in attaining funding.
Skate Sculpture then partnered with Emerge Associates and Common Ground to finalise the detailed design. This included a state-of-the-art playground and exercise area, communal spaces, pump track, basketball court and skatepark.
Our design team amended the bowl to improve lines and made a few alterations to the skate plaza including the addition of an A-frame and swapping out the five stair for a Euro gap for increased flow and diversity. The skatepark was built by Carving Concrete and makes for an excellent riding experience.
